I have a small yanmar engine that must be replaced and have been offered a 5411 in good running condition. I see that many older Catalina 30s came with this engine but with only 11 hp is this realy enough power for this boat?

Repowering?

If I needed an engine replacement, I would go with the biggest diesel that would fit (and I could afford). I have the 5411. It is a great little engine, but I would like to have more horsepower and a bigger prop. For some reason the builder started to install larger diesels in newer models. Why is that? I love the 5411 but when the time comes for replacement I will be adding more "ponies" down below!

5411 diesel

Gary; I had a C-30 with a 5411 for five years, spinning a two-blade folding prop. It's a great little engine, simple and reliable. If you're getting the engine for free or very cheap, you might want to check out one of the new high-tech auto feathering props that will put every single horse into the water but still allow excellent sailing characteristics. IMHO, that combo would be a very good one. Larry W.

Great little engine but if I had to pay for one...

I've got an 83 with the 5411. It's a great little engine. Very reliable and seems to be the only diesel engine that MAKES fuel. Of course I'm kidding, but I'm luck if I go through more than 10 gallons of fuel per year! (I calculated a fuel consimption of about 1/4 gallon at almost WOT over a 10 hour period last year). If you are getting the engine for free or very little, I'D GO FOR IT...

5411 install project

I now have a used 5411 diesel that I am currently installing. I am told that it runs like new (we'll see). Are there any pictures available of how the exhaust is routed to the stainless steel water muffler which is on the port side of the engine compartment? Are all Catalina mufflers located in this area. My concern is that when on an extreme port tack the muffler is higher than the motor. Is it possible that any water still in the muffler will find its way back into the manifold? I am wondering what the standard factory install of the system looks like.
