Installing 1 1/2" hose to hose barb

So - I have to replace the 1 1/2" galley sink drain hose. I have had no luck being able to fit the new hose on the hose barb. Of course it is in an area that is almost impossible to work in - very cramped and no leverage. The hose goes on about 1/2" and stops dead. I have tried hot water but maybe it was not hot enough. I was thinking of dish soap or maybe a combo of both.
Any suggestions ???

What type hose are you using for the drain?

Exhaust pipe expander works if you can justify buying another tool. I struggled with cockpit drain hoses for an entire weekend, bought the tool.
A heat gun works well too, I hear.

I've used the heat gun before, but be warned, be very careful. It's very easy to get it too hot, and melt the hose. Dish soap has also worked for me in the past.
Something else worth mentioning if you don't already know, where did the fitting come from? A point made on this board at another time, and something I've learned through experience, marine hose 1 1/2" is NOT the same as "Home Depot" 1 1/2" fitting. I once ended up grinding down the barbs to get the hose to fit. Not a good solution, but it worked.

Heat won't help with EPDM hose. Any thing over boiling risks damage.

The catalog only lists 1". Sure it's 1 1/2?

Also consider glycerine and K-Y. Slippery as hell. Don't use oil--it will damage EPDM.

This is the original 1977 gate valve -I know -I know - but it still works fine and is in great condition. Due for a change to a ball valve next year.
The hose is from Defender and is 1 1/2" white trident HD bilge hose.
Thanks for all the ideas - I will try K-Y then really hot water and /or a heat gun.

ps- never heard of an exhaust pipe expander. Maybe I can make something similar.

I thought of silicone spray - maybe - but not WD-40 .

I've always had trouble with the corrugated type hose fitting over barbs... there doesn't seem to be a lot of uniformity in that area.... Perhaps the Trident HD reinforced PVC tubing... a bit pricey at $5.99/foot... but it may save your knuckles... If the lubrication method doesn't work that is.

I hate using that white plastic hose.
I just changed out a sink thru hull and installed reenforced engine water hose. Significantly easier to install than that white stuff.

Junk the white crap!!!

That's big hose for a sink drain- like household size for the sinks. I know my head hose is 1-inch. The galley, maybe 1.25- really too big for it's need.

RAD,

Keep in mind that a sink drain hose will NEVER be under pressure. Why would you want to use a 200PSI pressure-rated hose in this application?.

Your drain hose works on gravity, not pressure. Go with PVC or vinyl reinforced clear tubing. Visually, it's easy to inspect the hose over time. They should last 10+ years in your application.

With simple hose, hit the barb with WD40, soap or spittle & it will slip right on.

This also brings up another safety point. They make a newer Heavy Duty 316" stainless steel hose clamp. The cheap old models are 304SS. You can easily tell by the rust & failure breaks. These are the ones that fail. I just had to replace six on an inspection of my boat hose connections. So far over the past year, I've replaced about 75% of the old cheap clamps.
