Marine head installation I will be replacing my port a potty head with a proper pump out head on my 1982 O’day 25’ and need a few questions answered. 1) Where is the intake through hull sea cock located? 2) Where is the holding tank located? 3) What size holding tank should I install ? Doug

head

the simple answers is intake low as possible so head will work when boat is heeled over, and reached in an emergency. holding tank should be as short a run as possible and fit where possible, a small 5 gal will work for 2 people for several days, fit the largest that space will allow. use the expensive head hose for this job, double ss clamps on all hoses.

Porta potty MSD?

Here's another option. Why not buy a 5-6 gallon MSD style porta potty and plumb it in for a deck pump out? Much less hose to deal with (and have to replace when it starts to stink), no tank to buy and you have the option to empty the thing on your own if there's no pump out available. With a 25 fot boat, stowage space is at a premium. No need to use it up hauling around more crap (sorry, I couldn't resist).

Danny...

...how would you easily disconnect the vent and pump out hose to empty it by hand? Jack

You're right Jack...

"Easily" may have been an overstatement, I sould have said if you had to, you could disconnect the hoses and haul the thing off the boat to dump. I have heard of in line quick disconnects for hoses that if used with a ball valve could allow you to take the thing off without too much trouble. I haven't gone looking for them however.

I went the MSD Sealand rout.

After my first season last year with it I couldn't be happier. I used the one with the 5gal tank 965MSD SaniPottie. I was able to rout the pump-out and vent hoses so they stayed down hill towards the unit to prevent any bad stuff from sitting in the hoses. It is so much better than walking around the marina with the "funny looking suitcase" and dumping/rinsing in the bathrooms. Now if you want a self contained system with a china head you could go for the much costlier Traveler 911-M28.
