Install of wheel to 30' O'day

I am gathering parts to change to a wheel from tiller on my 1979 O'day 30' The tiller has its good points but just takes up too much room when sailing and especially during tacks etc. So I was able to find a pedestal and wheel and am now seeking as much information I can on making a good install, As always this form has supplied lots of how to info so I really appreciate anything you can send in my direction. Also any source for used parts. I found the Edson web site full of ideas and the needed parts but nothing is better then hearing from folks who have done it themselves. I also want to reposition the Yanmar controls so they can be operated from the wheel and again appreciate any info you can forward

Great upgrade idea. I recently switched from a tiller to a wheel, by switching sailboats, and could not be happier.

As much as possible, you will do yourself a favor by not buying parts from Edson, as they are pretty proud of them. Try used sources for parts.

Thanks for the tip and by proud I think you mean $$$ Any suggestions where to begin to search for used parts that work, not necessarily for boats, The way we sail it should be for tractors as I was sure we were going to break the tiller many times this last season, Something about the winds on lake Huron. :))

Check with Boat US Insurance and TowBoatUS for derelict boats. Our boat was towed to a local yard after she was holed. The yard broke her down into component parts and sold them, including the binnacle. After Frankenstorm Sandy there may be many, many derelict boats along the East Coast that the insurance companies would be happy to unload.

If you contact Edson they will be glad to send you a drawing of every thing youl'l need.....you might have to break down and by some parts.....did this mod on a Bristol 24

Thanks everyone. Project s well started. Edson have been great with everything, even to help make my Orion wheel work with their gear. (I just measured the tiller post this week so the can bore the correct size in the quadrant.) and place the order for the parts. I'm Excited!! Stay Tuned, Ron
