install a wood interior

I know I'm crazy, but here goes. I am thinking of replacing the carpet on the inside of my O'Day 272 with wood. I would first remove the carpet, followed by the adhesive (grinding, sanding, ect. Next would be to glass in studs of marine ply 1/2x1x2, 16"O.C. to add reinforcement to the hull and attachment points for the wood. Foam board 1/2" thick would then be installed between the "studs" for insulation. Finally the wood, glued and/or screwed. This is a project for next winter, just planning now.My question is: What wood would you recommend? I want to stay clear of teak as I want to lighten up the interior.Thanks for your replys.

Studs are not 1/2x1x2. They will be 1/2 x 2 x length required.

We had a J30 which was finished with Ash and was very light colored. You might consider Oak which is more readily available.

Don, a heat gun softens up the glue and the majority of it can be scraped with a 4" stiff blade putty knife (scraper). The remaining glue comes off real easy with acetone. This might save you on the grindingsanding. Lowes, etc., have 14" hardwood ply in a 4'x 8' sheet, red oak and birch I believe. Like luan, 14" hardwood ply is fairly flexable and should conform to your hull interior curvature. You could probably adhese it to the hull proper, without the need to screw and stud. That is, unless your looking to "insulate". In that event you could always adhese it to the surface of the foam and tack the studs.Hope this helpsClayThe "Amare"

Don Casey wrote about such an upgrade in both this Old Boat as well as 100 Fast & Easy Boat Improvements. I'd recommend either one. I plan on doing the same project to my O'Day 25 in the near future.

veneer

have you thought of veneer, it comes in 12" 24" X 4 or 8 ft. install with contact glue and isnt too difficult to use.if you are interested let me know and i can give more infoJim
