I am contemplating installing a "Sure Seal Locking Waterproof Hatch" manufactured by T-H Marine in the cockpit sole of my Pearson 30 to give me better access to the Atomic 4. Any comments from this list would be appreciated, especially those that may have installed this unit.

I don't understand exactly

what or where or why you are doing whatever it is you are proposing. It would help if you would elaborate.

cockpit hatches

over the years Ive had 2 boats with cockpit hatches. They were not Pearsons but they had the same thing in common with every cockpit hatch they both leaked. thats probably why pearson didnt install them in the first place. It certainly would make it a lot easier to get at the engine. Especially the Atomic 4 I had 2 of them and they both needed a lot of getting at. Leak any water on that zenith updraft carburetor and you know it wont start without a lot of tinkering. I`d think very carefully about it. Bob Fox 1975 P26w #74 whitecap Marblehead MA

A4 access

I assume you are talking about better access to the dipstick. The only other maintenace item on the rear of the A4 is the impellor which you should be changing once per season and would be impossible to get to via inspection plate. Here is a link to an extension. Buy one of these instead of cutting the cockpit sole. I did and they work great. http://www.moyermarine.com/cgi-bin/shopper.cgi?search=action&category=KTAS&keywords=all&template=Templates/B000_storebuilder.html Tim R.

Cockpit -hatchfit

I agreee it doesn't 'sound' very good. I advised a very knowledgable friend not to do it. Next time I was doan to his boat he showed me how simple it was to get at his Atomic four (columbia 36) that was one point, but it never leaked. He put in good Lewmar hatch I think with O ring seal, and his scuppers drained the cockpit water out fast too.
