Hi all, What's the best sealant to use when installing an inspection port? Silicone? 3M 5200? Epoxy? Other? Thanks, Aurel

Marine silicone

I'd use a quality marine silicone. 5200 or epoxy would seal it up real nice but you'd never get it off again if ever there was a problem with it and it needed to be replaced. -Brent

Sealant

Aurel, I removed and resealed the inspection port on my 20 gallon holding tank using 3M 100% Clear Silicone. I've had no leaks and there has been no trace of and odor comming from around the inspection port. You can find this at any home improvement store in a small tube for around 2-3 dollars. It makes a great sealant, its removable, cheap and it cleans up easily.

neoprene gasket

We use neoprene gaskets on some of our equipment. The gasket comes in contact with & seal oil that is heated to 200+ F. We get them from: http://www.tamparubber.com/gaskbilt.htm It seems that they should work if you can tighten them adequately. They are inexpensive and will not restrict your removal of the inspection port.

Frame ?

I presume we’re actually talking about the inspection port FRAME, which should never require removal. The opening Port should have a neoprene gasket or O-ring. For the Frame, I’d use a polyurethane (5200) or a hybrid poly-urethane/sulfide (Life Seal), or an epoxy (depending upon substrate, & what I had to hand). Since it’s not likely removable, Silicone (with it's poor bonding characteristics) is a poor choice. Others will disagree ... :) OMHO Gord
