Inspection Hatch

Has anyone installed an inspection hatch between the battery/fuel tank locker and the aft cabin on the H34? I thought a 10 x 14 opening hatch in the bulkhead may help in the servicing of the batteries, and access to the fuel shutoff etc. Any ideas? Hatch would be weather tight and structurally as sound as the plywood.

did so

yes i did put a hatch there. I put a hinge on it and a latch so i could gain access easily. that is where i have my fuel filter too. Makes it very easy for a filter change. gary

Ditto so here too....

I put a hatch inbetween the aft bunk on my 34 and the fuel/battery compartment. Used a short sabersaw blade to cut it (make sure you have someone watch as you do it so as not to cut into the fuel tank.) I then used 1x2 around the outside of the cutout to prevent the new "hatch" door from being pushed inward. Two hindges on the bottom and a twist lock on top and I was done. Gave me access to the exhaust and scupper hoses, better access to the batteries (have to move all the lines I have hanging from a board mounted in the cockpit locker opening), fuel/air separator in the vent line, and the refrig I mounted under the aft lazerette locker. It also allowed a second escape path for someone in the aft cabin if ever needed. I can still fit through the opening but it has gotten harder as I age. I'll stick to just checking batteries and fuel level for now.
