I have been looking at a 29 foot and a 30 foot Ericson and they seem to be very much alike to the untrained eye. I would like any and all coments about these two boats or Ericsons in general. I sail a 25.5 Hunter now and have the bigger boat itch but due to finances it is a small itch so I cannot afford a 3o foot hunter or catalina. thanks ahead of time. "MIC"

The Ericsons were built in Costa Mesa, CA and were a relatively high-volume producer along the lines of Cal on the left coast and O'Day and Pearson on the right coast. They rated and raced competitively. I believe they are well-built and had quality hardware at the time. I think you should just take care to look at individual boats of this vintage and get a good survey. I think that you would be happy with the boat if you get a good one (or a fixer cheap). Rick D.

as tender as a Hunter too!

Mic: Had a friend with an Ericson 29. Boat was very tender. Sailed well with a reef. I don't think you would find the price of a H'30 or Cat'30 74-80 much different in price as compared to an equivilant condition Ericson. You will probably be dealing with a gas engine vs a diesel. The only problem that they really had was the fuel tank was starting to decay and they were getting rust in the fuel system. They also had a problem with the transmission (difficult to shift sometimes). The tanks are glassed into the hull and difficult to remove. An Atomic 4 is available as rebuilt for about $2800-4000 if it needs replacment. Most of the engine parts are still available so this is not much of an issue. I liked the boat and felt it would be a good midsize boat for your area. You should get a good survey on any boat that you decide on and then figure you will need to spend SOME money on it anyway.

Price vs. gas engine.

You must be getting a deal on the Ericson because on YachtWorld they are higher than the Hunter 30 on average. And you are not getting a diesel engine. As a Hunter/Cherubini owner I am somewhat biased but the Ericson interior pictures don't compare. See the "Related Link" for prices and pictures.
