I currently own an o'day19 but have an opportunity to purchase a 28. Any insights to this model would be greatly appreciated. Boat is a '79 model but is in excellent condition. Thank you in advance.

I have owned one since 1995, a 1985 model. Could not be happier. Very few failure issues in my case, though "your mileage may very"; these boats are stable and sail well, very good value for the money. Be sure the Diesel has had decent care. Previous owner had overheated this one and coked the injectors, causing stalls at idle. I took them out and sent them to a Diesel specialist who overhauled them and the thing runs like a top. Put in an oil/water separator if it has none, keep your pump screen clean and change your filters properly and you should be good to go.

Mine is a 1985 and I have owned for 8 great years. It sails well, especially in moderate to heavy air. Cabin is roomy althought not extravagent and could use more storage space. I have added an AC/DC fridge where the cabinet holding the stove stop was located. The original Traveler, mounted on the cabin top had no controls, which I added. Engine is a Universal and runs like a top. Wheel steering is excellent and the boat balances exceptionally well with very little weather helm. I have moved my boat to Lake Champlain and although the O28 sails well, I am looking to move up to a 30 or 32 as we are now taking longer trips. You would do well with an O28.

Thanks for the response! I am very excited about this boat and can't wait to seal the deal. The only negative aspect regarding this boat is that the engine was removed and the boats auxiliary power is now an undersized outboard - 8hp to be exact. I believe I am going to have to upgrade the engine to a 15hp. Any thoughts on having an outboard on a 28.

We had friends with an O'Day 28 and wow, what a great big 28 footer....keel stepped mast. Our friends had a tiller...they wished for a wheel but eventually went golfing instead.....the boat is extremely stable and does not like to round up....will sail forever with the rail in the water and the owner gets tired, but not the boat.
I think you would want a diesel...I'd download the brochure and see what size of diesel was std. equipment then look for a little more H.P than on the brochure....the boat is a dream.

I have a 1985 O'day 28 which has the orgininal engine. It is a Universal 10 hp diesel. The engine is reliable but underpowered. I can power at about 5 kts with 2000 rpms. The engine is rated at 3500 rpms but anything above 2000 and I get a lot of black smoke out of the exhaust. I would recommend more hp.

Joe,
You need a mechanic look at your engine. Black smoke at higher RPM is generally drirty injectors. Not a huge problem.

As for a boat without an engine. Check compareable boats. Make an offer 10,000 under a boat with the correct engine. You will have a very difficult time reselling the boat without installing a desiel.

Panta Rei. The injectors were overhauled by a diesel engine shop. I've been told, variously, that the "smoke" is really unburned diesel fuel OR improper setting of the propeller, etc. I've had the prop reduced in pitch to what I believe was the right one and this improved the "smoking" by 2500 rpm. That is, while underway I could increase the rpms from 1750 to 2000 rpms. I'm going to have the prop checked against pitch specifications. Thanks for the response.
