I have a 2003 Hunter 260. Over the past two years, I have noted several small stains developing on the main and jib. They appear to be assoicated with spiders that nest in the creases of the sails during the week. I have tried to remove the stains with soap and water but they will not budge. Any suggestions on what to use?

Stains

Tim, I'm not sure that I have encountered spider stains on sails before. Usually I try cleansers on the mild side and then if they don't work I move on to something stronger. There are sail soaps available but they don't seem to work as well on tough stains. We have had a lot of luck with citrus-based cleaners. You can always try a stain remover or spot cleaning with bleach. If that doesn't work you can resort to sending the sail to a professional sail cleaner. Thanks, Bill C. Doyle Sails

Hah!You've no idea what kind of poop stains can get on your sails! Spiders indeed! Perhaps you should sail in heaven, whatever that is. Regards, Jim

Wasp stains

I just purchased a boat that was stored for a couple of years. I found stains on my sails. There where wasps nests above the stained areas, soap and water did not work. How much is it to get the sails cleaned? Also in regards to storing sails in the off season, is it better to roll the sails instead of using the bags? Thanks new to sailing and learning, Darrell

Bug stains

Last summer I picked up some persistent stains on my relatively fresh mainsail while rolling it (best way to store it) and found they would not wash out with normal mild soap. I sprayed on a little "PreSpot" which contains Melaleuca oil, made by EcoSense. The stains rinsed out in less than a minute. I've used that stuff to remove ink stains from a shirt pocket. I'm sure it won't remove rust or mildew stains, but it did the job in this instance. Other spot removers might work just as well. It did not seem to harm the resin in the dacron, but in just the right light I can see where it was sprayed on the sail.

Check this out.

Check out this archieve link. When you are not using the boat, place some pest strips in the sails. This will keep them out.

Pet Stains??

Bug Stains are understandable.... However, do you have any recommendations for removing the odor that a Pet would cause? To be specific, I had stored our sails in the basement this year and our Cats through it was their new litter box! (yes - it's true) Now the sails smell wonderful:) Any suggestions? Thanks, Mike

Pet Stains/Odor

I've never tried it on sails but there is a product available at pet stores called Natures Miracle that works great at home. Try doing a test patch on your sail before you go all out with it. Bill C. Doyle Sails
