Between boats and looking VA
Hello to all... first post. Looking for input on this boat... www.seawave.info. I've been looking at her remotely for a year or two and was wondering what someone else's thoughts are based on the web page. I'm a little cautious over 1) the location and 2) the fact that this boat has had several people put deposits on it in the last year or two and it doesn't seem to sell. She also doesn't look like much for comfort... no shower, holding tank, full sized berth, etc.

TIA.

Far too complex for my taste. There is enough stuff to go bad on that boat that you may never leave the dock because of pending repairs.

When a boat is selling for at a distress sale price -- that is, less than a third of what comparable boats of the same size and age are selling for -- it is usually because the boat is distressed. Are the pictures before or after the tsunami hit it? Any recent surveys? My gut would say to leave this one at the dock and move on....

I think it's pretty much like the ad says: If you want to hop in and cross oceans by your self or with a mate, this could be a pretty good buy. You'd get there safely and comfortably, but not quickly. If you're looking at daysailing or weekends or two-week cruises, as Ross says, you can get much better values, close to home.

Traveling half-way around the world to spend $40-50K is not ideal, that's for sure. There doesn't seem to be any good solution to that problem.

Intriguing, tho. I'm sure it brings out the dreamer in all of us.

I'd postulate that the big reason for the low price is the location. plus who out there can survey a monel hull? the other masons are all fiberglass.
they should ship the boat back to the us or aus for better selling oportunities. they might be in tough financial condition and can't afford that hence the deal?

Curious why a boat built in the middle east and sailed from there to Malaysia has a state of Delaware registration on the hull. Regardless, if there have been multiple prior offers which you are apparently aware of, it should not be too difficult to obtain at least one of the surveys done - just make sure it is a legit one and you might get some good info.

Its too cheap There about as much $ in equipment and recent upgrades then the asking price. Not to mention where the boat is. I would pass

Beautiful web site. I recognize the design. I was in love with that boat when I was in high school and just beginning to get interested in boat design.

The hull is a MIXTURE of steel and monel. Different metals below the waterline. That could explain a lot about the price.

I'd pass...

Are you planning a circumnavigation? Reminds me of the quaint farmhouse that my brother and I demolished. We built two smaller modern homes, preserved the farmland, installed energy star appliances/windows/doors, new design included more natural sunlight, used renewable resources, and made a decent profit. This boat doesn't seem efficient or practical, and is probably worth more for the scrapyard. You'd be better off buying an old Cal 40, IMHO.

I can understand wanting to use steel and monel for price reasons, but why would they mix the two below the waterline???

I thought it said all monel below the waterline? Steel above with steel decks covered in wood. Then they go on to say another boat like it runs with out bottom paint.
I think it's amazing it displaces 12000 lbs. for a 36' boat.

If you look carefully at the photos and the original drawings you'll see that she is the best part of a foot below her lines. The displacement if probably well over 12,000 lbs.

Issues

If you note the 8000 watt inverter, the electric stove, and the 660 AH batteries all supported by 150 watt solar or 150 amp alternator you will see that you are NOT going to be sailing much if you like hot food.
My math says a 10 minute coffee is going to take 7000 watts for 1/6 hour. At 12 volts that is 7000/12=583 amps for 1/6 hour or 97 AH.
97 AH for coffee means you can make around 6 pots before the batteries are at 0% charge, 3 pots takes you from 100 to 50%. To recharge 97 AH with the alternator you would have to run the engine 150/97=1.5 hours!!
You could set the pot on the exhaust manifold and make a pot in that time.

Monel is a great materiel to build out of but if you do get a problem or just want to add a thru hull you are going to have your hands full. Monel is a VERY TOUGH materiel to work with.

2 more cents...

I'd consult with a designer to see just what is the practical lower size limit of a steel yacht? I could give my theories of D/L ratio's, but I can barely add, yet formulate an equation. My main concern would be that the surfaces of this sailboat were properly (sandblasted) prepped and maintained by the previous owner. And the coating systems (epoxy paint) have been used properly. I'd still worry about rust through-out the boat, here is my 10 year old fisher plow, painted every year, and two holes rusted right through 11 gauge steel, cheap steel? rust under paint? Probably a result of not grinding out the rust to begin with, I just wouldn't want a boat with a fist sized hole through her hull or deck because of my lack of welding/grinding skills.

Appreciate all the input folks. I asked the owner about a surveyor in the area and he did not know of one. I think the cons are starting to outweigh the pros at this point.

Run a mile. I had a surveyor lined up to look at this. The vendors made it so awkward for him to get an agreed time to do a survey that he ( and I) gave up.

Electrical

What am I missing here. A lot of 220V appliances, running through an inverter, but no feasable way to recharge the batteries. A 1000 watt generator that only puts out 110V isn't going to do much good, 150 watts of solar isn't going to do much good, and a 100 amp alternator would work itself to death and not do much good. Only proper way to run all this stuff would be with a big 220V genset. The way the boat is set up, barely enough power to run the electronics. Cooking once unplugged from shore power would be virtually impossible, as the batteries are not going to run an electric cook stove for any time at all. Guess you could motor 24/7, and cook one meal a day. Maybe

Re: Electrical

The best way to make heat is to directly burn fuel for the purpose. Even burning diesel fuel to charge batteries to operate incandescent lights is not as efficient as lighting a lantern. This boat as it was set up is absurd. It couldn't spend a month away from the dock without the crew starving to death.
