Factory Option?

My 40.5 has a removable inner forestay. The chainplate is in the aft anchor locker. Might be worth a call to Hunter. Good luck. Rick D.

It is an option.

We had a 1994 P-42 (hull # 156). In the manual from Hunter, there was a listing for the innerforstay option. We never did it, but it could be installed at a later date.

inner forestay

I put one on our Passage 42. We ordered the item to be built by Hunter themselves. They had a contractor build it based upon the drawing they supply in their owner's manual. It only cost us about $150 in 1993. I installed it myself, and it was very easy. We had a storm staysail built for it, and hooked up an ABI removable inner forestay handle put on the cable. We cruised the coconut milk run to New Zealand and back using it. We're very happy with it and recommend it to anybody who plans any offshore cruising. We routinely furl our 110% genoa at about 18 knots and shift to our storm staysail. The boat balances well with it.

Hunter P42 Inner Forestay

I recently added a heavy air staysail to my inventory as we will be heading into the Carribean in about 1-2 years to live permanently. I did not want the hassles of tacking a genoa between the inner and outer forestays, however. I did purchase the lower mounting plates for the inner forestay directly from Hunter and installed them myself. It took a bit of work and the diresctions with the plates was not exactly correct (I think they were for an earlier version than my 1996 model). In coordination with my local UK sailmaker (been working with him for over 20 years), he built a heavy weight staysail with a high clew that tacks with a snapshacle directly onto the Hunter lower mounting plates. The sail has a Technora bolt rope to limit stretch (somewhat expensive) and a Technora halyard. The sail is launched from the sailbag. I have added Garhauer adjustable lead blocks for my genny, freeing the original Shaefer lead blocks for the staysail. This allows me to fly both headsails, if desired. I like this system very well. If you wanted to replicate it, you might want to call me at 248-477-0096 as well as the Detroit UK sail loft (ask for Bob DEclerq). They could probably make one for you just like mine. Good Luck!
