I recently purchased a 1987 Catalina 36. My wife would love to have a custom inner spring mattress for the forward vee berth. I inquired at the Catalina head shed, and discovered they only make them for the MK II. Can I get some suggestions on alternatives to a custom mattress, or sources for a custom mattress that others have used or tried???

THEY DID A GREAT JOB AND IT IS VERY COMFORTABLE. USED FOAM IN 4" THICKNESS. SPRING MATTRESS STARTED AT 5" AND WE FELT IT WOULD COST TOO MUCH IN HEADROOM. COST WAS 1400 + OR -. Last year I ordered a 6" latax foam mattress from Mattress Handcrafters. They came to the boat and mesured for it. It fits perfectly. Cost about $1000. Folds in half for access below. We love it.

I looked at Handcraft Mattress Company, before opting for the Catalina mattress (I have a 36MKII). HMC seemed to have a quality, if slightly pricey, product. My guess is that a 6 inch innerspring mattress for your v-berth would run about $1200 plus shipping. I ordered the Catalina mattress, mostly due to ease of ordering and the lower cost. However, I wasn't impressed with Catalina's warranty ("well, if it's hurt during shipping we'll cover that", as opposed to the 10-years to life for the HMC one). Their product knowledge was equally mediocre. No matter what you choose, it's just about guaranteed to be better than that awful foam pad. Out boat is only 1 year old, and the foam pad is just plain painful to sleep on.

Box vs Solid Latex
LaDonna, Well, they're both great. I think the nod goes toward the solid latex mattress. The box spring version transmits your partner's movements while the latex version did not. Both are equally comfortable, but like I said, when your partner stirs at night, you may notice it with the box spring. As far as the companies go, we went with Boat Mattress for the C-38 because they are a local company. I was able to save shipping by picking the mattress up when it was finished. HMC shipped the box spring though with no problems. Longevity of either mattress was also no problem. Unlike foam, latex and the box spring have no memory - your body will not leave permanent depressions as foam does over time. We also bought fitted sheets for each. My wife also modified a bedspread to fit the berth. True luxury to sleep with real sheets! Also, the condensation issue under the berth is eliminated with either mattress. The boats were much dryer since getting the new mattresses. I would wait until a boat show because there are significant discounts or free options offered then. The pillow top is a must which ever mattress you opt for. Compared to the stock foam or replacement pads supplied with new boats, the mattresses are well worth the money. We purchased a dense foam mattress five summers ago and have loved it! We had it made at a nearby local mattress company for only $250! We had priced mattresses and were delighted to have such a wonderful mattress made only 20 minutes away. Any local mattress company should be able to make a mattress by measuring your v-berth cushions. Our mattress has not developed contours from sleeping on it, nor has it compressed. We sleep wonderfully aboard our boat. The top of the mattress is like any other quilted mattress top and the sides and bottom are vinyl. The fit is wonderful and I had sheets made from king size t-shirt material sheets that work fabulously. I would like to have a bedspread or quilt made now. Good luck! My husband, who has back problems, is very happy with our choice of mattress.
