I assume you mean for having a storm sail. I don't have one rigged, but don't see what difference it would make for single handing. The head sail is already a fraction rig with a smaller sail, haven't had any problem single handing sailing with it.
I have the cutter rig on my 49. The inner sail is self tacking so in that sense it is easier to handle when sailing single hand. However, I only sail with out the forward 110 jib when I am sailing with a reefed main. So in that regard it doesn't make it any easier since I am generally sail with both sails unfurled. Net message it just depends on how you rig it and how you use the sail choices you have.
Hi guys thanks i value your input. As we sail mainly in the Tasman sea (horrible place). My question came as a result of ripping the clew out of the headsail in 38 kns, and started wondering about a safety back up.
Cheers
Steve
Steve .... well in that case I would be sailing with a reefed main and the inner jib on my cutter rig only. So yes in heavy wind it is easier to tack since the inner jib is self tacking. Tacking up wind is just steering the boat. It is easier how ever because the inner jib is self tacking not because I have the cutter rig with an inner jib, any self tacking jib would be just as easy. So the key for easier is the self tacking set up.
wow just reread my post I might have been a little repetitive on the self tacking talk
