Inlet Running?

I'm considering putting my 23.5 in a marina at the beach (Oak Island, N.C.) this spring. Access to an inlet to the Atlantic is nearby. I have a Yamaha 9.9 on my boat. Anyone have experience running inlets with this combo (23.5 boat + 9.9 engine)? I'm wondering if I have enough horsepower to do it safely. The marina I'm considering has only a few other sailboats (mostly bigger than mine). Thanks for any advice.

You've got the power!

Hi Bruce, Last summer, my son and I were on a fingerlake, in the interior of BC, on a h26. While out on an extremely pleasurable broad reach, I took a peek over my shoulder to check the weather. Good thing I did because a big fist of wind was roaring down the lake and stiring up the spray. No time to ponder, I instructed my 1st mate to furl the sails and bare poll it. Moments later the world turned ugly and we were under power of a 9.9 2cyl Tohatsu. The waves grew to about 4 to 6 ft, in a matter of minutes. The frequency of the waves was really my concern. This produced an extremely steep face, on the wave that my son coined as "mega choppy!". This was a delicate bit of helmanship because we had to head diagonally across the onslaught of the weather to create a longer line for the boats travel, between waves, so we could handle the pitch without slamming into and going awash. Required power that the 9.9 was very capable of delivering. One consideration, though, is to have a long power leg so that the propeller dosen't cavatate when the bow goes over and the stern rises away from the surface. I take it that the inlet that you'll be navagating will have a surf running through so this could be the issue that you'd want to address. All the best! Larry Barnes, vessel "CNTRL SEA"

No problem

I have a 23.5 with 9.9 hp Johnson 4 stroke. I've run Ocracoke Inlet, Hatteras Inlet and the Potomac River at the Chesapeake Bay under various tidal conditions. I've never had a problem with lack of power. Fact is I've passed many much larger, inboard sailboats heading into the mouth of the Potomac on and outgoing tide. Sounds like a great place where you plan to keep your boat. Alan Long S/V Random Access

Lockwood Folly Inlet/Holden Beach

You must be in Davis Canal and will be going through Lockwood Folly Inlet. We go to Holden Beach and go through the same inlet in our 23.5 with a 5 hp Nissan. We've had no problems. I have also done it numerous times in a Tanzer 16 with a 1.5 hp motor & under sail alone. The current is swift & the channel very narrow. Breakers aren't bad if you stay in the channel. Its easy to run aground if you get outside the channel. I always have timed my trips through the inlet to go out with the outgoing tide and come in with the incoming tide. Coming back in, when you turn to starboard to go home you will be against a strong current in the ICW before Davis Canal, but its doable. Maybe I'll see you there next summer.

power

Actually, you are overpowered with the engine on the 23.5. I should know as logging more time on this rascal than anyone. Be careful not to use full power or you will plow through the water.

9.9 should be enough

A 9.9 should do the job. I had my 23.5 at Sandy's (on the ICW, east of bidge to Oak Island) for a week while vacationing there this summer. When returning via the river chanel, the wind and current were just a little too much for my 5hp Honda. I made headway, but progress very slow. An 8 or 9.9hp would have made a big difference. I'll probably go with an 8 just to save a few pounds of weight on the stern. Greg Cunningham gregc@inin.com
