I have a Yanmar 3HM35F. Just started the engine and have white smoke coming from the #2 injector. No fuel leaking onto the block. During this, she was running very smooth, putting out great water flow from the exhaust....no smoke from the exhaust. Any suggestions Greg

It sounds like a bad heat shield or gasket.

If the engine is running smooth like you indicate and there is no fuel leak it is indicative that the injector is working properly and is fine. The problem may lie where the injector seats into the engine. You may be getting some blow-by exaust coming up the seal. In order to seal the injector to the engine you have 1) an "O" ring 2) a gasket 3) a heat shield 4) a copper gasket 5) a pre combustion funnel and 6) a copper gasket. These parts are compressed by the retainer plate and two nuts at the top of the injector. You can try tightening them to see if the leak stops but if it does'nt then the injector must be removed and the components that form the seal be replaced. It is recommended you have a diesel mechanic remove the injector and the seals. If you want to try it take note that the fuel return line must removed from all injectors, plug or cap all fuel openings to prevent entrance of dirt and note the location of all washers. The precumbustion funnel or chamber is like a thimble enbedded into the cylinder head it will need to come out to replace the copper washer under it. Do not damage it and if it is very difficult to get out removal of the cylinder head may be necessary. Hope this information is of help.

Be sure to check the diesel fuel string

Greg, be sure to read the string about diesel fuel that's current in the forum. There's a new standard diesel fuel for automobiles that has less lubricity and can score injectors. If you've been carrying land fuel in jugs out to your boat you may have introduced some of this new stuff into your tank...

white smoke = water

hi Greg maybe I am totally wrong in your case, but normally white smoke coming from anywhere at an engine is caused by water mixing into the fuel or being burnt along with the fuel and therefore a sign of a leaking seal. just an idea... cheers Alex
