Does anyone have the preliminary Loos Gauge settings for the upper and lower shrouds for the H19. Would like a scientific starting point. Owners manual speaks in terms of "tight". Everyone's "tight" is different and varies considerably. Would like to start out with medium air settings.

Rusty I've always tuned using the 'wrench on the halyard' method described in the manual. I get the lowers close by sighting up the mast and measuring beam to beam with a halyard. Or you can just go with D for the uppers and a 4th higher for the lowers

to check the archives for that info or contact Hunter. As I recall, Hunter recommends shroud tension at about 15 - 20% of the cables breaking point. For my H23 that would be about 600 - 660# for the 5/32" cables. I don't know the diameter of your cables but the same rule would apply. Remember - loose shrouds will cause you grief so keep them tight. Jerry s/v Shapieron

How tight is tight?
When I bought my 95 H23.5 four years ago, I called the Hunter factory to ask "How tight is tight". The answer was, "Guitar string tight". Well, I've played guitar for over 30 years and that really didn't tell me enough, so I bought a Loos guage and went with the 20% suggested in the instructions for a fractional rig. The previous owner had them at only half that tension. Be sure to do the actual test they suggest, which is to sail close hauled in a stiff breeze and make sure the lee shrouds are not slack. Actually grab them and give them a twang. A friend with a H26 also has a guage and I noticed the other day that his still go slack. It's the shock load which results from loose shrouds that is hard on the rigging, as the Loos guide explains. ...RickM...

I avoid absolute statements but here's one: LEEWARD STAYS SHOULD NEVER BE SLACK. Start with the size and composition of your stays and apply the 20 percent rule. With a Loos gage the rest is easy.
