I am trying to find any information about a 12' fiberglass catboat that has the word nipper embossed on the floor of the cockpit. It was originally turquoise color which makes me think it was made in the mid fifties. I can find no information about them.

Nipper & Ray Green Boats - Toledo Ohio

The 12-foot Nipper was built by Ray Green Co. in Toledo, Ohio. I sailed a wooden Nipper some time in the 1950's. My friend has a R. Green brochure circa 1969 listing the Nipper, complete with sails for $890. We assume that it's the fiberglass model, as at that time, Greene was building in 'glass. Friend's boat is a 14' Rascal II; $1395 new in '69. Other Greene boats in my friend's brochure were 16' Rebel, and a Vixen for $699. Not in brochure, but I think that they also produced a Horizon (cabin-type boat), seems that it may have been offered in two lengths.

WOW JON

Did You bring back the memories!!!! I also sailed a plywood Nipper of the 50's all around the BASS ISLANDS in Lake Erie as a kid. There was a fleet of these around the Toledo area. One of the more popular boats at the JOLLY ROGER sailing club in Point Place. Being from PUT-IN BAY Oh, at the ILYA Regatta races I was always second to Ron Anderson from Jolly Roger club. I could never ever come even close to him, and I know those waters!! Oh what good days those were!!! I also remember we didn't warm up to the plastic boats all that well as they weren't as pretty without all the varnish, even though the woodies leaked so bad too. Jon did you remember the "Slipper"? Ray put the mast back 6" to 8" almost in front of the centerboard put a jib on her and the Nipper became the SLIPPER?? The sails on the woodies were cotton and would mildew if you didn't dry them out before putting them away. At the island races you saw sails spread out all over the park grass and the Perry Monument grounds as well.. A sweet little boat they were. And a little wet too. Hee He.
