I would like to know information or problems that are typical with a 1986 Hunter 28.5 I have a 1981 Catalina 25 Fixed keel W/outboard and was looking to upgrade to a larger boat and found 28.5. I have read many of the Hunter forum questions but none was relating to a 28.5. I would appreciate any advise. Thanks

None

The 28.5 does not seem to have any inherent problems with its production. The only commonality would be rust on the iron keel but, especially since you are in freshwater, that is a cosmetic issue at worst. Sails well and as fast as a Catalina 30.

Some things to look for

1)The toe rail bolts tend to leak and discolor the hull liner. 2)The fuel tank is molded into the hull which can be a hassle if it develops problems. 3)The stock boat came with only 1 battery, adding another is reccomended. 4)The iron keel tends to rust and stopping it is nearly impossible. Don't worry about the crack between the hull and keel unless it leaks. 5)Water tends to get into the x-braces under the sole and can rot the sole and cause odors. 6)The rudder can develope bubbles (separation of the skin and foam) if left in the sun. Paint it white or cover with a white cloth. Overall they are good boats, large and fast for their size. The head is small but servicable if you don't use the shower much.

depends on care

I have a 1985 28.5. Other then a littel rust on the keel last year I have seen nothing wrong with the boat. Then again, the previous owner took really good care of her. It's a great little boat, that doesn't really feel little.
