Is there a go to website for guidance as to which marinas are suitable for either long or short term stays? As well as offering some sort of appraisal ala Lonely Planet style. And approximate rates.

At this stage I'm only interested in the South of France and Spain.

While this site is great, it appears to be more oriented to the USA.

You might want to try the cruising sections of www.cruisersforum.com, which are arranged by areas of the world.

Good luck.

There are many cruise guides available for the region. Most are either in French or Spanish (Castillan). But ActiveCaptain gives a good idea.
I was there for a little more than a year but on the Costa de la luz (Atlantic).
Most public marinas belong to the Juntas (provincial governments) and docking was relatively inexpensive and the people were extremely helpful. Summertime in the big centers might get hectic and more expensive!

Most of the chatter I come across on French sites points to difficulties of finding long-term moorings or slips in France, with waits of 5 years or more for popular areas. Transient spots seem to be available, but they require that you keep moving on.
