I'm looking for information to rig a topping lift on my Hunter 146 and also a better outhaul setup then the one that comes standard with Hunter 146. What size lines, specific hardware ( preferrably Harkin)that I might by at Marine supply such as West Marine. Diagram or clear photos might help. Thanks

Boom Kicker

Back when I had a 146 I installed a "boom kicker". That solved the problem of the boom falling into the cockpit in a manner I thought quite adequate.

Go with the boom kicker

I agree with Jim, you will really like the boom kicker. As for the topping line, if you double the length of the line you can use it to hoist a flag. In my case I used it to raise and lower the mast, I just tied a loop at one in at about 6 feet from the end, attached the winch strap from the trailer and cranked the mast up or down.the other end was attached at the mast horn. The boom kicker will also allow you to change the shape of your sail while you are sailing. my out hull line I would adjust at the docks, I never really had to bother with it while sailing. I did add a single line reefing system which really worked well, you might want to consider adding that too. Happy sailing. Glenn

cost but easy solution

I have rigged many this way. Install a stainless steel eye strap to the side at the top of the mast. Attach either a 3/16 or 1/4 line and run down to a fiddle with V-jam cleat style block for example the Harken #244. Obtain an addiitonal small shackle to shackle to the back end of the boom. When running the line, run it thru behind the big roller and around the small or bottom roller and up exiting in the jam area. It is easy to raise and lower the boom. Many have liked this set up.
