Bryan, I purchased an 87 model 272 last year. This was my first sailboat. I love it. It is a great vessel; sails well, lots of stand up room. One of the roomiest 27s I have seen. The boat sails well, but it does have a tendency to be on the tender side. I am still very happy with it. If the boat you are looking for is in good shape, I say go for it.

i'm looking to by my first sailboat. i saw a 27 ' o'day for sale at my local marina. what wear and tear should i be looking for ? pros and cons of owning an o'day ?

I've owned an O'day 25 for 3 years and love the boat. How old is this boat? Is it on the hard or in the water? You can find lots of info on this site. Look at the archives section and search for O'day 27. I'm sure you'll hear this from others . . . Get a survey done. Then you'll have someone on site that knows what to look for. Good luck, Mike

Oday 27

Everything I could say will be found in the link below. I feel that Oday made one of the best boats in its price range. They are well made, but problem areas are the same as many boats when it comes to deck hardware bedding and general maintenance. I would pay to have a survey done if you find the price agreeable.

Best boat I ever owned/sailed!

Hands down....what a honey of a boat. I agree that a survey on an in-water boat is deemed advisable pre-purchase. You'll be surprised at the history you will find from both the survey as well as from the hull/sail numbers. Curiosity: does it have a gold mast? (The 1976 version had one.) Good luck.

yes it does have a gold mast ! owner says the motor won't turn over , it did last season ? i'm looking at the boat thursday , any advice ? i will be getting a survey if we agree on price.

Great Boat

I really like mine -- it's well built, roomy, and comfortable (for its price and size). Standing headroom below, fast under sail, and with the atomic 4, it's fast under power as well. I bought it cheaply, but I did a lot of work on it. Good luck & let us know what you do.

The Oday 27

Hey I just read your post. I bought a 1976 Oday 27 in 2002. What a boat. Of course you will want to have an expert look at it because any boat can be abused. However i will reassure you that it is one hell of a boat. Very stable, roomy, and comfortable. It has some problems but all boats do when they come of Age. It is a boat that is big enough for comfort yet small enough for daysailing and coastal cruising. Good Luck!

272 a tender boat - not!

Chip: Like you, I love my 272 (an LE model), and the only reason I'm now selling her is to move up to a 322. But I've never thought of the 272 as a "tender" boat. Quite the contrary. I've always felt that, compared to similar production boats, she handled a blow rather well. One reason why I upgraded the boat to a line-control traveler was to make it easier to dump air when the breeze picks up, rather than having to go right to reefing. Just my .02, FWIW. just got back to the computer today so i didn't get your email before you went to see the boat. how does it look and what do you think? does it have shoal draft (4 feet)? ok...question #2. would the hull happen to be light blue?

27 O'day for sale

I have sailed my '86 272 for the last 12 years on the Great Lakes and Florida. This is my third boat in this size range. The 272 is by far my favorite for comfort. She is easy to spend a couple weeks on without going stir crazy. Go for it!! You won't be sorry.

I love my 272LE

I have owned several boats over the years, but I must say my favorite is the one I own now which is a '88 272LE. I've been through severals blows and she weathered them quite well. She's easy to work on yourself as my web page shows and a joy to sail. My family and I spend several weeks on vacation every year just traveling from port to port around the Great Lakes. it was a disaster !

what a wreck , can't believe he was trying to get 10 grand for his boat ! yanmar was blown , white crystals all over the place , oil all over the inside of the hull , especially under the floor deck cover (2 inches deep with oil and water !) outside looked nice , says it wasn't even registered ? no numbers on the side. and wouldn't alow for a survey !? wish i didn't get my hopes up ! oh well

Tender 272

Pete, I see you have the diesel model, mine has the 9.9 Yamaha outboard. Though I have never been on the diesel version, I'm guessing the additional weight of the diesel engine, low in the vessel, keeps your version from being tendering up quite as fast as mine. The diesel version is nice, wish one had been available near here when I was shopping last Summer. We took her out on Lake Norman N.C. on Sunday. The wind was moving fairly well as a cold front had just passed through the area; we were getting gusts to 35 MPH. We reefed the main and pulled out about 2/3 of the 150 genoa. We were getting a nice ride until the gusts hit and we had to head up quickly to keep her from becoming overpowered. According to the GPS we reached 7.1 knots, and that is with a dirty bottom. I would never have dreamed she would do that. This is my first time out after putting the sails back on her, just had them reconditioned at Sail Care. Guess the fresh sail, fresh breeze combination did the trick. Chip

Well, Chip,from what I just saw in your posting on the SailNet O'Day listserv, we agree one important thing: the 272 (standard or LE) is one good old boat, and it seems we've both been treated real well by her. The 272LE was our first boat, and as I've told numerous people recently, I wouldn't be selling the 272LE if it weren't the chance to move up to the 322. I am looking forward to a 30 something vessel. Sailing on the lake is fine, however, nothing can compare with the big pond. I look forward to doing some coastal cruising and day sailing. Initially, I want to work south from NC to Fla., maybe one day I will venture north and check out the New England states. That is a large enough play ground to keep me happy for quite some time. The NC coast alone is enough to keep anyone exploring new areas for quite sometime, at sailboat speeds. Fair winds Chip
