She is called an "8-ball sailing pram". She is S&G (stitch and glue) construction. I recommend S&G for the first timer as it takes all the "fine woodworking" out of the project. The only tools I needed where a portable jug saw to cut out the panels and other wood parts, a wood rasp to put the final rounded edges where needed, fiberglass and hardener pumps (HIGHLY RECOMMEND THESE), several PVC unions/short tubes for keeping the epoxy fillets uniform, drill and screwdrivers to install the hardware and a wood plain. The pumps are the ones that fit in the can and REALLY save time and product when glassing out. No measuring then scraping it out of the measuring cup into the mixing cup. the wood plain was handy when taking the square mast down to a round one. Amazing time saver. I thought I'd be there all day "getting it round" and it only took about an hour! After cutting out the panels and drilling the small holes she comes together in about 15 minutes with the wire stitching. I used saw dust as a filler/thickener for the epoxy paste. It is much cheaper $0.00 than the glass beads or silica and makes the "glue" match the wood. The beads and silica make the paste white which would be ok if you paint her but look flaky for a traditional wood boat look. i did not buy the hardware package from the web site. they where cheaper from defender.com. The only thing i did not like was the gunnel. I stained mine and the stain would rub off when she bumped the boat. Fixed it after a few years with a commercial edging, which I also don't like. It rusts badly. I used top grade external bright white enamel on her bottom and that has worked well. Only some beach scratches. when looking for a source of 1" wood for the dagger board and rudder think stair treads.
Sadly Segue was destroyed when she was the victim of a docking maneuver gone terribly wrong. She was 7 years old and was showing no signs of any wear or tear.
we plan on building Segue II in the near future.
As for preformance, she can carry 2 adults and 1 child or 1 adult and 3 children easily. I can row her (built the oars out of the leftover stock from the mast and panels) a mile in about 10 minutes fully loaded. She will do around 10 knots when under sail with a 13 knot wind on a beam reach (totally fun!). She tows great but does race the boat when on a down hill run with following seas. i never put a motor on her as that would require that I pay taxes and register her but others have and they seem to be satisfied.
