My 1985 C-30 has 2 group 24 batteries mounted under the chart table. They sit in a well that is just sized for them. I am interested in adding more capacity and am interested in learning if anyone has tackled this problem and if so how they solved it.

I have an '82 C-30 TBS and wanted to add capacity too. I replaced the two group 24s with two Trojan T-125 6V batteries wired in series, see link, they fit perfectly into the battery tray under the nav station (though I did have to raise the shelf slightly) and added a seperate group 27 starting battery in the engine compartment next to the muffler. Now I have 235 Amp hour house bank and don't have to worry about not being able to start the engine.

Ditto Aaron's post. I did exactly the same thing to my 81 only I put my starting battery under the rear 1/4 berth. Once I leveled the area with shimes and plywood (just big enough to accommodate the new battery),I bolted the new battery box to the plywood floor and ran the wiring to the pannel. The entire job was finished by noon. Now I use position 1 for starting and position 2 for my house power. Check out the link below, great info on batteries. Cheers, Ron s/v Seascape

I went to group 27

I have a 1985 Catalina 30, keep it at Ice Harbor, next to your old slip. The previous owner added a battery in the port lazaret on top of the water heater and went to a single group 27 under the chart table and another group 27 in the lazeret.

battery capacity

L.D.; I friend of mine added a group 27 battery in his Cat 30 when he installed refrigeration. He mounted it on the centerline behind the fuel tank. He had to fabricate a wooden mount to keep it level, but he's very happy with it.

moved the batteries

Moved batteries under stbd seats and gave enough for bigger/better batteries. Hope this helps.

Added 4 golf cart batteries.

We have a 88 Cat30 that had 2 batteries forward of the nav table. This summer I cut out the starboard battery box and made it big enough for 4 - 6 volt golf cart batteries. The result is 12v - 470 amp house bank. I added a truecharge 20 below the nav table. This has been a fantastic charger. We have a seperate starting battery on a glassed in shelf on the port side. The alternator is connected to a slitter (will change this for a battery combiner) so the selctor switch only demines where the battery power comes from.

more details, please

Aberlour, Interesting information, Like L.D. have been looking into this project since we purchased our C30 in June, It is one of my winter projects (one of many that is). Search the archives to gather up as much information as one could. Following Stu's recommandation I purchased Nigel Cadler's books, great help. Now I'm actually down to establish the specific models, brand names of the components I should use. Since you have done this project, any chance I could get more details off you? (models, brand name of components, wiring diagrams etc) if so you can contact me via e-mail at nfgg@sympatico.ca. If the interest is there, perhaps this could be shared here in the forum. Thanks!
