Hi, Peggy, The suction "dip-tube" in my holding tank ends a few inches above the bottom of the tank (seen through the inspection port), so that the tank is never pumped below 1/4 full, thus reducing useful capacity. Is this necessary to prevent obstruction of the tube, or a manufacturing screw-up? Can it/should it be corrected? Thanks!

Sounds like the tank depth was mismeasured. It can be fixed. The easiest way is just to start over to make a new pick up tube. Buy a new tank fitting. Thread it into the tank. Measure the depth of your tank. Note how far the fitting extends into it when threaded in. Subtract that much, less at least 1" from the tank deth measuement. Take it to Home Depot or any hardware store that sells pvc pipe. Buy a piece that's the right length and is also a tight fit for the inside of the tank fitting. Have one end of the pipe cut at about a 25 degree angle. That end will be at the bottom of the tank...cement the other end into the fitting with PVC cement...thread it into the tank, attach the hose...and you're done. The only hard part is making sure you measure correctly. If in doubt, have the pipe cut too long and trim off the end that goes into the fitting as you need to.

Welded to the tank?
Who made your tank, George? Can't be Ronco...their dip tubes are attached to the tank fitting. Depending upon the diameter of the tube, you still may be able to to make a new one as I described...it'll just go inside the existing one. Glad you like my book!

Peggie, I'm out of town and cant check the tank right now, so I may be spelling the mfg's name wrong from memory, but it's close to that. It's an alum. tank installed by Hunter. Both holding tanks and the fuel tank are from the same source. Regarding placing one tube inside the existing tube, what would the minimum diameter be to be functional? Of course the last thing we need is a constipated pumpout tube!!! <g> But it surely would be nice to have access to the entire tank capacity. George

If the tank is aluminum...
It's not worth the effort to modify it...'cuz if it hasn't already started leaking, it will soon. I suggest you live with it as is till then. You can specify a dip tube of the proper length in the next tank.
