I would like to fit an inboard forestay for the storm jib on my HR382. Advice from anybone whos done it very welcome. Rod

Inner forestay

Rod, The previous owners of our Rasmus 35 fitted a moveable inner forstay for a storm jib. We've not had occasion to use it yet but it's nice to know it's there. The stay has two fixing points on deck, one just aft of the small forehatch/chain locker for when the stay is in use, and one on the starboard outer deck just forward of the starboard shrouds for when it's not being used. This keeps it nicely out of the way of the genoa. It has a quick release lever and T-bar fitting and is very easily and quickly moved into and out of position. When we bought the boat our surveyor said he felt the through deck fixing was probably not reinforced enough and I tend to agree. It is simply bolted through the deck with a small wooden backing plate on the underside - there's not much room for a larger backing plate so I'm not sure at present how it could be reinforced. Inner Forestay

Rod, I too am working on fitting an additional inner forestay(often called an 'emergency forestay')to my Rasmus 35, just as Jeremy describes. I will be fitting the upper tee ball (Gibb type fitting)within 10" of the mast top and the tack shackle on the foredeck will be onto a strap (1"x 1/4" x about 15" long st. steel) with a tube welded acros the top. This strap will be let through the foredeck and bolted to the bulkhead in side the chain locker. Seldon told me the max stay tension of just under a ton (9KN) should be accounted for and 6mm wire would be ok. Remember that the halyard will need to be turned or guided against the mast at a point just below the tee ball. HR 38 inner forestay

I fitted an inner forestay to my HR 38 by means of a large U-bolt set in the deck just forward of the anchor locker. It was backed by a 1/4in SS plate right across the underside and the void made up of epoxy-filled pillows. I am considering adding a turnbukle down to the stemhead fitting as the final arrangement. It has worked so far (4000 miles) Bernard Mitchell
