The 25c/b oday just back from the keys was originally rigged with inboard auxillary power. Does anyone out there know what size and what make was used. Why did the previous owner take it out in lew of an outboard? The boat would look alot better and probably would handle better with the weight more inboard, right?

Inboard vs Outboard
Originally, the O'Day 25 was offered with an inboard gas engine (a Saildrive) as an option. They sail along just fine with an outboard. I wouldn't recommend less than a 9.9, or more than 15 hp. I also wouldn't recommend putting an inboard gas engine back in it. Too many potential problems.

You could also get it with a Vire diesel. I don't remember the H.P. You are right about the inboard keeping her on her lines better, but there sure is a lot of storage space in that empty engine room. PM

I thought the Vire was a two-stroke gas engine. Very, very simple but not very powerful.

Thanks for the info. I have summised from the responses that it is probably better to used the outboard bracket for aux. power. I just never had an inboard and think it makes the vessel alot nicer. I am restoring to bristol cond, and just wondered? thanks, patrick

I use a diesel to repower my 77-25
Hi Patrick; Let me add my two cents and it may help. I have a 77-O’Day 25-fixed keel, tall rig and it had a 10HP Atomic 2 Gas inboard. I replaced the head gasket the started of last season and a month before I pulled it out in October it lost a Rod through oil pan. Being a 1977 I know it wasn’t worth fixing. After giving it a lot of thought and especially after watching other smaller sailboat using outboards and having a heck of a time dealing with weather and motors coming out of the water, I decide to install a 13HP Vetus Diesel. Because the diesel was 2 ½” wider I had to make some minor alterations to the excising fiberglass base that was original build by O’Day. Once I got Engine in the boat itself, it was relatively easier. The cost was about twice as much as a new outboard, but I personnel feel that the diesel is more reliable and a lot easier to motor with, also no reaching over the back of the boat to lower and raise and maybe more importantly I have a great charging system.
