Well if you come up with something I'd love to see, also I will work on the idea and we can maybe make millions in rudder motor sales!

well let me say I don't race my boat. Typically have no care in the world as to when I get to where I'm going.
With that said I think the above examples of what you "could" do are all very very bad.

First the rudder is NOT made to take the punishment of a motor on it no matter how small the mounts would be questionable even just that much drag when not running it pulling on the rudder. It's gonna be a weed magnet. Cant get there to clean it without diving.=pain in the arse.

With an electric motor yah you can do it but unless your either moored or anchored really close to where you sail (not always the case) or are hard core and never use motor the amp usage with an electric motor powerful enough to propel the catalina 22 loaded with passengers you need at min 3hp the only one I know of that's made for such is a torqeedo and I'll admit they are very cool I thought about one.
Then there is the price for the 3hp model at 1800 dollars you could buy 2 brand new mercury 3hp motors and have one for future parts for the same price.

If your sailing on a lake depending on the lake you might be able to get away with a trolling motor. Just remember wind always dies and typically when your the furthest away from where your wanting to be it's simply murphy's law so keep that in mind.

Personally I'd get a merc or Yamaha or whatever brand makes ya happy put it on the motor bracket get anywhere from a 3hp to a 9hp 4 stroke and then you can just worry about the rest of the boat.

Unless you really want electric for electric sake and are staunch environmentalist then get the torqeedo and 50watts of solar and extra batteries and have it. I would have but the cost is just to much and on those dream trips ya don't think of till way later I'm not sure but I'd rather just be able to carry another can of gas if I get in trouble.

In a nut shell if your gonna do the electric stick it on the motor mount don't stick it on the rudder or cut any big ass holes in the hull. They designed the motor mount to put motors on put it there electric or gas. All kinds of things "can" be done but doesn't mean they should.

All this is coming from someone that stuck an electric anchor windlass on the front of his 22 when the designers never intended for one to be there BUT I still think sticking a motor anywhere but on the motor bracket and having it set to raise out of the water underway is just asking for trouble.

That's all my opinion on the subject normal programing can now continue on this channel. I'm sure others will say it's the best idea since peanut butter but the above is mine.
