inboard diesel vs outboard 4 stroke

My inboard diesel is showing signs of getting tired. It smokes a lot,
and the combi prop arrangement doesn't always go into reverse.
Debating whether to fix it, replace with another newer diesel, or pull
it all out and go with an outboard. I would appreciate input from
those who have done a repower, with approximate costs and
advantages/disadvantages of each. Seems to me like the outboard is a
cost effective option that also fixes the backing up manuvering issue
of the vega.

Hello.

I Used a outboard 8 CV four stroke for a one year. The
power is OK but I haved 2 problems:
1. The fiberglass of stern is feeble. I need reinforce
the stern.
2. With a stern sea the engine , the engine it`s very
near of the water.

Now I use a inboard Beta Marine. It's to much better.

My Vega was powered by an 021 Albin gasoline engine. After
about 20 years this engine gave up, and I replaced it with
a 10 hp Diesel engine with a 3 blade prop, thus keeping
only the stern bearing and stuffing box - both 25mm).
The Diesel is noisier, but I can go about 500 miles with
one tank of fuel.(In case there's no wind...)
An outboard has the advantage that it can be removed and
taken to a shop if there's need. That's not the case with
an inboard.
I wouldn't worry about the "feeble stern", that can be
reinforced.
My vote is for the inboard- it may cost more, but it has
its advantages.
By the way- I didn't say what make Diesel I have... for the
sake of discussion it not necessary.

Which brings up a good point..
How far can I go on one tank?
I have the original MD6A.

I found out another interesting thing when I emptied out my fuel tank and filled it with new diesel.

The specs list the tank as holding almost 10 US gallons (sorry, don't know offhand how many liters that is). But the little pipes that go down in the tank don't go even close to the bottom of the tank.

I had to put in two containers of my portable tank to get the fuel level to reach the sucking tube.

So, I guess that is about 4 gallons US.

So we don't really have a 10 gallon tank. It is something less.

Hola Xavier,
My Vega is in Berlin, Germany. I live in Arroyo de la Miel (Malaga), and wanted to bring Cin Cin down here, but I have not had any luck finding a berth at a reasonable price.

Hi Xavier

My Vega (V1030 - Vegabond) is moored in Port Olimpic, Barcelona - but only until Spring!
Finally, after 2 years of working, saving, and fixing up Vegabond, we are headed off for
bigger adventures. Wahooooooooooooooooo!

Cheers,
Adam

Hi Adam

In which direction do you plan to go? "Little Star" is in Cyprus and
there is at least one other Vega in Turkey.

Hi David

We shall be heading eastward towards Italy and round to Greece and maybe beyond.
Would love to get to Turkey, but we would like to volunteer in a sea-turtle conservation
project on Zakynthos so we shall see...
