I have just bought a 1979 HUnter 27. She is beautiful. Amazing shape and two surveys, one form the dealer and one I had independently. Minor minor things wrong (the fire extinguishers are not up to code) anyway I live in Buffalo New York and the boat is in Erie Pa., anout 100 miles away. I am going to sail/motor the boat but I am wondering if anyone knows how many miles per gallon it may get. It is a yammar 1 cylinder diesel and it holds twelve gallons on board. Also will running the engine for 8-12 hours, if I had to be allright? Has anyone ran an engine for that long before. Thanks

8 to 12 is nothing !

8 to 12 hours is nothing, these engines can run around the clock assuming they are keep in good condition (filters, hoses, belts, etc). rough estimate is 1/2 gallon fuel burn per hour running at cruise speed. 12 gallon tank = 11 gallon usable draw should give 22 hour operating time with out refueling. That all being said I would carry a 5 gallon spare tank of fuel anyway. Can't hurt !

I have one of these, if your going against the tide you will use more than you think. I'd bring extra and also know where you can stop along the way. Key thing on this engine prob a ysm12 is don't fill the oil to the fill mark, keep it just below. Otherwise you will burn lub oil and you'll wonder whats happening. Happened to me the first time out. Its a design problem with this engine but no big deal. Best source of info on marine diesels is torenson marine web. www.marinedieseldirect.com Great support, forum for questions. Like many this one is a little underpowered and vibrates a lot.. but very dependable. Little noisey..
