Hello all, I am close to making an offer on a Passage 42, 1990 model. Wonder if the group can tell me any specifics that I need to look at with this model. We will hopefully be scheduling a survey in the next 2 weeks. Any surveyors in the Tampa/St. Pete area that could be recommended would also be appreciated. Thanks for the info and I must say that this site seems to be a wonderful asset to anyone who owns a Hunter. Thanks again, Steve Watford stevew@aui.com

My 2 cents

I have a Pasage 42 (91). We looked at alot of 42's before getting the one we now have. If you send me your e-mail address I can send you a list of the things I have done or plan on doing to the boat. The list is long but that doesn't mean that the boat I bought was in bad shape. I just have this bad habit of taking every boat I have ever owned and rebuilting everything. One thing to watchout for is the holding tank and hoses. My boat is on it's 3rd holding tank. We still think it's a great boat. E-mail hunter42@gte.net

Love our P42

We have had our P42 for four years and love it. No major problems at all. We did bring the roller furling up out of the anchor locker to improve easy of handling and visability and had custom sails made. The boat is fast under most conditions except downwind (get a chute). I think this may be the closest to a true blue water boat Hunter has ever come - it's tough.

Love our 42 also

Congrats on your upcoming buy. We upsized from a H36 to a 42 last March and for the Chesapeake Bay, the 42 is great; ours is a 1990 also. It will take most anything the bay will throw at it. Make sure you get a good surveyor - we did and found some problems in the rear locker area. The previous owner allowed water to stand in rear locker area for a long while and the water rotted the rear bulkhead. We had it repaired, at his expense. That was the only real problem - great boat!! Bill

In market for P42--Update

Well, we are much closer than when I posted the original message in the forum. Our offer has been accepted, the bank is on board and we have a survey and sea-trial scheduled for Tuesday. Once again, I'm interested in any particulars that I should look over the surveyors shoulder for. (other than those already posted) The one we are looking at is a 1990 model. So far appears to be in good shape. Was told by others that she has had three owners, all local to Tampa area, and was used very little by the first two owners. The current owner has owned her about 3 1/2 years and took an annual trip to the Bahamas for several weeks and occasional local sailing. He has moved up to a large power boat. We are supposed to close prior to 12/31?? Has anyone out there installed a scuba compressor onboard their P42? If so where? I am wondering if we can fit it in the transom lockers, appears to be plenty of room if it will go through the opening. Anyway, we are getting close and anxious. Thanks again, Steve

For'd head

In addition to all the nbormal stuff, be sure to take a very close look at the forward head. Make sure the seawater intake seacock is open and that the bowl will flush. Then, leave the seacock open for the rest of the survey to make sure the water level in the bowl has not crept up. If the level is higher, I suggest getting either a price reduction or some kind of indemnification for repairs. It can be a tough problem. Good luck! it's a wonderful boat!

Phil, seems to me...

..that a vented loop between the pump and the bowl should solve that problem. It's fairly common on any toilet that's below the waterline if the dry/flush valve is left in the "flush" position...and Jabsco has shown a complete willingness to replace any pumps that are flooding the bowl in the "dry" position.

I agree

...and it may really be that easy, but I know our archives have a few accounts of problems with that forward head, and as I recall it's been fairly tricky to fix. On my 42 guys from Marine Sanitation put in a new vented loop that didn't solve the problem - the boat was sold with the problem and I never did find out what the resolution was.

Aft Head

My fwd head works great. It's the aft head that I have problems with. I moved the soliond thats in the engine comp. a little bit lower and it works alot better now.
