In need of a head kit

Hello All

I did a thread search for kits and didn't get a hit but I'm certain that what I'm asking for has already been answered someplace on here... so apologies in advance for the repeater question.

I have made a hobby of fixing up badly neglected sailboats and Monday I purchased a 1975 Rhodes 22. This one has a nice hull and rigging but the interior is wreaked. I once chartered a very nicely tricked out Rhodes 22' with a low profile head, with a modest holding tank and electric macerator. The set up was very nice. The "head chamber" door folded right up against the head and took up almost no room but then folded out into the main salon (accordion style) to make a nice size room when you had business to do.

I'd really like to install something like this in my new project boat but I have never owned a boat with a true head before (only port-o-potties). I've tried to search the on-line chandlers (since I don't live near the shore) but I'm certain that if I tried to order all the parts I needed I would certainly overlook something important and critical or get parts that didn't fit etc. and spend forever getting this done right (and at a higher price for all of the wrong parts I ordered).

So... does anyone know of a kit where you buy the head, tank macerator, tubing, deck plates, through hulls and valves, etc. etc. for a small marine head set up in one complete package? Does anyone know enough about it to put a package together for me (I'd be willing to pay a modest consulting fee). Am I making too much of this project in my mind? I've done a lot of things to an old boat but I'll be honest, the idea of installing a head has me feeling a bit intimidated.

I've added a picture of the layout including the folding door around the head...

Thanks in advance

Rob

I THINK what you want is....

An "MSD" portapotty, plus some hose, a pumpout deck fitting, a y-valve and a macerator pump. I dont think all that's available as a kit, but now that you know what to look for you should be able to assemble it all. You can buy most of it from the online store right here on this site.

So do a little homework, then get back to me with the questions you're sure to have.

I recently upgraded my head from the old WC Headmate. The new one had complete installation instructions, including all plumbing options depending on head placement and holding tank location.

I suggest you find the compact toilet that would most likely fit into the space you had in mind, open it up and see what the instruction manual offers in the way of installation. Trust me when I tell you that no matter what planning you make, initially, you will have to make some changes as you put it together. Be patient and look for a good local chandlery for your supplies.

Through hull location is the biggest decision. Take your plan to the marine expert, or post it here, for comment.

Use only marine quality clamps... not the stainless steel ones from home depot.

The large diameter sanitation hose you will need is very expensive ($4.00/ft) and.. it is difficult to manipulate. Hot water, not heat, is the recommended method for fitting it on tight, barbed connectors.

Joe...it's only a 22' boat!

Designed and built when toilets could flush directly overboard. So any system that would leave ANY storage space would have to be a self-contained system.

Thanks Joe

I appreciate your advice on clamps and hoses etc. I'll certainly come pack here before I start ...

One of the problems I face is the lack of a local chandlery. I live in central Virginia and mostly lake sail with a few trips to the coast each year. So my fear is I'll order a bunch of stuff only to find I ordered the wrong stuff and ...
