Replace or Add-on

If you are planning to replace your mast with one with a furler, check out http://www.seldenmast.com/. This is the system aboard the newer Hunters. I could not be happier with the main furler on my H380.

In Mast problem???

I chartered a 2000 380 in the San Juan Islands in the NW this past june. The in-mast worked "ok". The luff occasionally got hung up on the mast when trying to furl back in, which was a pain to deal with in a 20 kt wind. I feel the disadvantages out weigh the advantages. I would worry about something breaking and not being able to furl or reef the main. I prefer my fully battten main that I can douse in a few seconds.

This has been discussed at lenght many times. I have never had a problem with my roller main. Warren

Furling Main is great

Love mine on my 460 - and I don't miss having to haul main up and down at all especially on this size of boat. I have only had one problem where the bolt rope came out of the bottom of the track - dropped the sail and had it back up and furled away in 15 minutes. I have seen others who have had jams and have had to go up the mast to fix. I expect most problems people have with in-mast furling are self-inflicted - like anything else, use the equipment the way it was designed and it should work fine. If you are looking at a smaller boat with an easier to manage sail, then I'd probably go with a full batten for added performance, but for me with small crew and a big main, I like the furler.
