In-Mast Furling

still pulling hard

Our main is difficult to pull out pretty much all the time. I will have my mate read all your advice. I think our problem is a bend in the mast, or the boom needs to be lifted at the end slightly. I see little wrinkles all the time; so that is also an issue. After 3 year's you'd think we would have mastered this. I wish the dealer we bought from had given us some training on in-mast furling; as this is the first in-mast furling system we've had.

I've given this advice on another thread dealing with furling mains. With my present main I had problems pulling it out and pulling it in. However, I had previously had a Hunter 380 where the main went in and out very easily. I had a sail maker check the present main and it was discovered to be improperly cut. It went back to Doyle and was re-cut and works very well now on my boat.

Later on I heard comments that a number of Doyle sails were miss-cut that came from Asia and that Doyle was reshaping them at no cost to you. Have a Doyle sailmaker look at your sail. My suspicions is that yours is one that needs recutting.

I have used a furling main for almost twenty years and other then the early screw up on this one have had no problems. No, I don't go on starboard tack to furl the main in, I sometimes don't put pressure on the outhaul when bringing in the main and have no problem. I even have been know to furl my main going downwind. I just WinchRite (power adapter) my sails in and out and have no problems. I hope you get to enjoy it this way as well. Good luck.

Thanks Les. Our sails aren't Doyle but made locally and are original w/boat. We'll look into this as well as I understand that sails stretch over time as well.

I'm new to In-Mast and got my sail jammed inside the Mast. It won't come out and I wasted an entire day. I would appreciate any help. Thanks.

Mike
Mike,
Did you get your sail out yet? I am here in the Cape and could lend a hand if need be. Escapade is a 2008 41DS. We have had her since new. And I have sailed most of the other 5-10 year old Hunters at some point.....
