In line fuel filter

The service kit for the M25XPB engine included an 80 micron in-line fuel filter Part # 48076. This is to be installed on the inlet to the electric fuel lift pumps manufactured after December 2002. Has anybody installed this on pre - December 2002 engines and is this really necessary. I don't understand why newer pumps need this but Westerbeke say that older ones do not.

This is how my fuel system is set up.

Primary.......Racor R20P 30 micron fuel replacement element for the Racor 230R

Fuel pump.......Facet Posi-Flow EFP - 3


Engine.......Universal 298854 10 to 14 micron efficient %:what:

Not familiar with that pump, but it may be that the older ones (possibly a different manufacturer) had a built in filter?
If you have a good primary before the pump.. like 30 micron sized in above post.... it would not be necessary to have another filter, that wouldn't catch anything, in the system.

That's a nice filter you've got there. Is that an easy install to replace the original?

You have the newer "cube style" pump which takes the 80 mic pre-filter. The older "Gold Flo" pumps (round body) have an internal filter...
