calls; How many holes do you have in the bottom of your boat? can you place your hands on them without taking part of the boat apart. Do they all have seacocks on them that you have operated more than once this year?

No

Eight through hulls excluding sensors. All require lifting or opening something to get to, usually unloading that something. I probably have not opened/closed all over a year. I have bungs. RD

Open and close often

We have the following on our 40.5, not including transducers, vents, and bilge pumps: Forward head intake Forward sink drain Galley sink drain Aft head intake Aft sink drain Macerator Raw water intake We always close all of the seacocks when we are not on the boat. This does add about 3 minutes to the "leaving the boat" process, but it allows me to sleep better. To keep from accidently starting the engine with a closed seacock, I tie the igition key to the closed seacock. We have a friend at our yacht club that left his boat for less than 30 minutes (without closing his engine seacock). One of his fairly new hoses in the engine decided to leak and siphoned in enough water to sink the boat in the slip.

Tim...

...your insurance agent should buy you a drink! Nice work. RD PS: yesterday (Sunday), sailed for a while up from Los Alamitos with a racing fleet and stayed right up with an IOR-vintage race boat with about 35K of Carbon sails and four crew on the windward rail. Must have annoyed them! Beautiful day!

Holes in the boat

There are seven thru hulls that are below waterline: speed and depth transducers forward, engine and air conditioner raw water intakes and macerator, galley and vanity discharge just forward of the companionway steps. I close the ball valves and plug the transducers every time I leave the boat. Steve

Rick

Rick, We didn't use'd to close all of them, but after seeing what happened to our friend's boat, we started the procedure. The fact that we got a puppy (that we leave on the boat fairly often) made it an easy decision. Tim
