In-Hull Transducers

Just bought a Garmin 546s GPS for my 1988 Catalina 34 sloop. I would like to use an in-hull transducer (cheaper all around), but don't know if it will give good results. Anyone have experience with in-hull transducers in this model, or just in general on vintage, larger Catalinas? If so, where would be the best place to mount it? Thanks

Fill a ziplock bag about half way with water. Put the transducer inside with the opening of the bag facing up. Set the bag in the position where you want the transducer. Hook it up and see if it works. Usually the best position is forward and on centerline as possible. Deep enough in the hull that even in rough seas, the transducer is looking thru water, not air.

Thanks. What is the purpose of the bagful of water? Just to hold the transducer in position?

The water is a temporary signal transfer media to determine if the transducer will function well on your test location. Chief

Mark,

Yes, the water will give you a good idea about performance. The hulls are not much different than the C22s, who have been discussing this subject over the course of the past week. If you change your browsing period to five days and look around , you'll see that discussion.

The most likely spot on your C34 is under the V berth, right in front of the wall holding the drawer.

If you are not aware, our C34 Forum, like this one, is very good and can answer specific C34 questions you may have, in addition to this great forum.

My experience with 'shooting thru' the hull has been quite good. I had a fish finder that I wanted to test and I tried a 'temporary' 'shoot thru' by using a poly adhesive to stick the transducer to the inside of the hull. It worked great. It still works great and that 'temporary' test was over 10 yrs ago. A better connection would be a thin epoxy. Be sure to squeeze ALL bubbles out and keep the adhesive to minimum thickness. The point where you shoot tru must be solid fiberglass. Find a spot as far forward as possible, mid-line and where you can shoot straight down. The shoot thru will not work with a cored hull.
Good luck
