In Hull Transducer

We installed that transducer, but the instructions said to use mineral oil. We did and it works fine.

ethylene glycol is toxic to dogs and I assume bad for marine life

propylene glycol is supposed to be GREENer don't know if its true

turns out all freon is bad not just r-12

etyhlene for the most part i thought was automotive...and it has been removed from the dangerous goods disposal i thought...up here if its above 20 celciius and sun shining the collectors dispose of it by spreading it with tankers in large lots with keeping dogs etc away for the first while...propylene is what i use extensively and exclusively in low pressure boiler heating systems..im not certain of the disposal requirements of propylene glycol...another thing is that both products mixed equally with water gives much differant freezing points..

baby oil works fine down here and is the same as mineral oil, and is cheaper if u lose the seal while cruising, don't plan on going anywhere very cold anytime soon(ever) dedicated depth finder is in the bow and fish finder at stern for a backup.

We got a Raymarine ST40 depth finder with the Airmar thru-hull transducer as a gift. Because our boat goes on and off the trailer alot, I didn't want to mount the transducer thru-hull, so I trimmed off the flange, made an in-hull "tank" out of PVC pipe & a plywood base, siliconed it to the hull, and it works just fine.

What did I initially put in the tank? ... water. Yes, I have had to remember to pull the transducer out of the tank in the fall and sop out the water, but for now it works fine. I will eventually put it in properly with non-toxic RV antifreeze.

Joe...

that's the pink stuff we all use at winter lay-up for our potable water systems. I've seen mineral oil used much more commonly, however.
