In-Hull (Shoot through) Transducer

I am thinking about getting an In-Hull Transducer. They are listed as tranducers that work through a solid fiberglass hull. I am also considering a transom mount that would give triducer (depth, speed and temp)readings.

I am avoiding a through hull transducer simply because I don't to put a hole in my boat.

Suggestions?

Thanks,
Patrick

I have a cheap Hummingbird fish finder for depth. It has a shoot through transducer, and I installed it with a ball of wax from a 1/4 of a toilet ring. Not my idea, and I forget where I found it, but it works great.

I hung mine off the back like a common bass boat, (shudder). The only reason why, is I wanted to know the water temp at a glance. the Cape Fear river currents, and others as well, the temp tells me a lot. Most people probably couldn't care less.
I need one on the end of a thirty foot long bow sprit, as apposed to knowing how deep it is where I just went...
In all seriousness though, the "shoot through" seems like the best bet, I just liked this particular Garmin, so..

I used the Norcross Humminbird depth finder with the shoot through transducer. Worked great, didn't have to drill a hole in the bottom of the boat, and the customer service people at Norcross were great when I needed to replace the display.
I mounted the transducer in a container of water under the v berth forward of the keel.

Does anyone have a model number of a shoot-through transducer with a display unit ? Not necessarily a fish-finder, just a standard device to tell me how close we are to the terra-muddy or worse - terra-pedra below !! I have a through-hull now (the standard model that came with the boat when new) but it is unreliable and I don't want to mess with removing the through-hull fitting and replacement (if it's not leaking, leave it and install something else alongside is my current line of thought, but I could be swayed otherwise...).

I'm close to a WM store (the reliable marine people, not that super-centre crowd based in Arkansas) this week.

I have a cheap Humminbird fish finder. It's pretty good for depth and gives temp of the hull. The epoxied-in puck is located under the V berth. The head unit also goes home with me when I leave the boat.

I have the Lowrance X-4 Fishfinder with transom mount transducer, but have yet to install as I'm not a fan of the transom mount's effectiveness on the C22 (that and I don't want to clutter the aft end with more 'bits'). I'm thinking of switching transducers to a shoot through.

Fishing can pass the time when becalmed on a flat patch of water, and to amuse the crew, and I'd like to install the Fishfinder at some point. But my first priority is to ensure my depth gauging capability is sound (pun intended :D). Off to Wests today to take a look. Any ideas on a compatible shoot through transducer and in-dash display unit ?

Great TXMan and Bilbo - will give that a shot (sorry C22_Lady_OH for hi-jacking the thread). Saves buying (yet) another piece of gear.

Milton,
The transducer you have now will work. The manufacturers have just adjusted thier marketing to what sailors were already doing with the thru hull and transom mounts, sticking them inside the hull.
Mine (thru hull type I had on the shelf for a number of years) is stuck to the inside of the hull with wax like Sea 22 as far forward as possible. Just make sure it's directly on the hull and not a liner part.

On my new style, I snaked the transducer wire under the hull liner straight back to the keel winch. The fish finder is on a removable swing arm up by the side of the hatch wired to acc. on the panel. I wanted the puck in the bow so that I could tell how deep it is where I'm going & not where I've been ;-) These things aren't always 100% accurate. Weeds can mess them up. + our lake has about 6-12" of mud on the bottom in some areas.

I used a simple Hummingbird display for my through-hull depth finder. I chose it because it draws the lowest amount of power, especially lower than the fishfinder types.

Patrick,

I've got a Humminbird shoot-thru type with the small round display I can let you have. I'll need to try and get it un-epoxied from the hull, tho. I replaced it with Raymarine St-40 stuff. It worked just fine last year.

Mine is a standard transducer stuck in a whole tube of silicone. Just made a pig puddle and pushed it into it. I've done this several times before on other boats and it always works fine. Easy to remove and remount also.

If you use silicone, wipe the face of the transducer with silicone on a rag before you stick it in the puddle of silicone. This will eliminate some of the micro bubles of air the will otherwise form and diminsh reponse/accuracy of the instrument.
