Is there a best method or recommended method about sailing with the transmission in gear, forward, reverse, neutral? Yanmar 9 hp diesel with 3 blade fixed prop.

my understanding is that it all depends on your transmission. ON mine, (Atomic 4 engine), it doesn't matter if it's in fwd or reverse. But you'll need to check this for your type.

Check with your local Yanmar dealer. It all depends on the transmission, and if you get it wrong you can damage your transmission.
