Hopefully they're headed south and the sun is just rising -- maybe it will do SOMETHING to help that icy crust off of their sails.

Reminds me of the video of from "the Deadliest Catch".
The crew is sent to the bow with sledge hammers to knock the ice off the boat.

Spinnaker halyard whipping to start.
Careful narrow tack to see what you can do to steer wonton a narrow range to clear it.

Wonder what the main looks like?

That ice can do some damage falling 30’ onto you body or deck.

Two words. HELL. NO. If there is ice on my boat like that, I'm not close enough to the equator. :yikes:

tom, your photo is a wisp of what i've seen and had to clean up. late fall of 72' i was on the fitzgerald running the north shore of lake superior for protection from bad weather. 27 below, 60 knot winds, we iced up bad. the entire 730' vessel had a two ft glaze on it. McSorley was worried we could get top heavy. it was all hands on deck for days and days. was not fun

That's amazing, Jon. Haunting story. Was it the incorrect weather forecast that had you guys out there that day? 105, yikes!

time is money. the captain, jackie stephens, knew of the forecast as we passed long point, our last refuge, before continuing towards lackawanna to discharge iron ore. he was hoping to get to the dock before the storm so to not catch as big a delay. it did not work out, the blow slammed in maybe 2 hrs out of the harbor. its quite a tale. coming in the opening of the breakwall we were dragging all three anchors on long leads. backing full astern. during the ensuing battle we ran over tugs, yachts, docks, barges, bouys, all the time out of control. after a few hours we caught a break, the wind dropped to maybe 60 for around 15 minutes and we were able to spin the ship into the wind and put back down both bow anchors and with the engine at 1/2 speed ahead she held. the old man then said he would be in his cabin drinking whisky if any thing changed. :)

i was 23 and the bosun that day. too young and stupid to be scared. in hindsight, it was like living in a spielburg movie. it was so over the top of what you might imagine.

all the captains on the lakes took lots of risk in that era. the fitz was the biggest, strongest, flagship on the lakes. that sinking put the fear of god in all the captains and the companys. we all anchored allot sooner and more often after that.
