Improving pointing ability on a 270

I was sailing the other day on Narragansett Bay in RI and noticed that on my 270 (a 260 w/ a bulb-wing keel), that the best I could point was about 55 degrees off the eye of the wind. I was wondering what other people have tried to improve the pointing ability of a 260/270. I'm tinkering with the idea of adding a bridge traveller over the conpanionway.

Sheet in the Sails

I have the same boat. I trust you are sheeting in the sails. The outhaul is tight and even some small tension on the vang. You should get 45' to the "true" wind. CC

We sheet our H 26 main to a stanchion or rear cleat to get great pointing. When pointing is really important, we use our heavy duty boom vang(now an extra because we replaced it with a rigid vang) as a sheet to one side and our main sheet to the other side. This combination creates the effect of a traveler and allows for interesting adjustments. Any comments out there???? Lately, we have been using the rear stanchion brace as the connection point and that also clears up the cockpit area. Are we playing with fire???

Have Traveler Point Higher

Added a Harken windward sheeting traveler in the cockpit just below the step entering the cabin. It definitely helps pointing ability and has been also good in puffy wind conditions which we experience on the lake.

John. I have thought about doing this to my 26 for a couple years now. Did you use the small boat or mid-size boat kit? Were there any big problems during the installation? Mike Pajewski H26 "Loon"
