Has anyone had the nerve to try installing impressed cathodic protection on your prop shaft using your battery charger as the supply of DC current ? The stray current in our marina eat zincs like they were cough drops.

Zinc eating

Ralph, are you sure that it's stray currents from the marina? I've had the same problem with my 430, but after exhaustive and expensive probing, it was not the marina, but stray DC currents in the boat. Hope I've got it solved, but won't know until I see how the zincs are affected. Good luck Pete Burger KAILANI

how long

How long should zincs last? I moved my 42 from fresh water to salt in late April. Last week I pulled her for another task and found my shaft zinc more than half gone. Should I have an electrician start checking out the boat or how would I go about it myself. If someone has a source for this info I would be more than happy to read up on it. thanks, bw Sugar Magnolia

cathodic protection

Go to www.yachtsurvey.com . In the sight click maintenance then check articles on corrosion. It gives methods to troubleshoot the problem and some solutions. Hope this helps...

Current News

Ralph: I used to go through prop shaft zincs at a great rate of knots; no longer. A blue water friend was surprised when I told him that my battery charger was on continuously. He advised that I should charge about once a month for a 24 hour period, otherwise leave the charger off. My zinc now easily lasts a year; my batteries are in the best condition ever; what else can I say? If you live aboard or specifically need DC, then this solution won't work, obviously. Good Internet Site

That was a really interesting site that Marcie referenced. As she indicated, it had a lot of good information about electrolysis and other info one might get from a marine surveyor. In one of his articles he said that he used to live aboard an early 80s Hunter 40. After looking around, reading a review about a Hunter 28 (not a rave review), I wound up with one of his editorials called "The Decline of the Sailing Yacht" where he hints at the extention of the sail boat. I didn't know that only 2% of all new boats sold are sailboats!
