import/export/Selling your boat

Hi, i would appreciate some info.

The case: I'm buying my friend sailboat (Hunter 20), the boat is in NS, Asheville. I'm in Montreal Canada. My main question is the following:
My friend as title and registration paper for boat and trailer, on the back of the title paper there is a section for selling the boat, they is also a section about "notarizing/Notary". We wonder how important that is if the boat is sold out of state or out of the country. We also wonder about other stuff we should know, like getting any other special paper, ex: a letter saying that the boat will leave the state. If any of you have ever deal with that and especially some Canadian that have imported boat for states that have boat with title i would appreciated some comment. The Canadian custom are not real clear about the state of NC. They tell me that each state is different and they could refuse the importation of the boat if the title is not well filled but they won't tell me what they exactly need????

I know the procedure abut import duty and taxes, i have been there a few time. It was real easy with other state title including NY.

I sold a boat to someone from canada last summer, all he needed was a signed title for the boat, and a bill of sale for the trailer. Which was a pain, because I had repaired and modified it, then registered it as an assembled trailer. Luckily I still had the parts I had removed and cut out the seriel numbers from the bent section and tacked it to the new material and gave him the old trailer title too.

Make sure the title is signed in the proper location, some are confusing. If you are going to pick up the boat in person, shedule extra time to run to the local DMV and have them tell you what you need to make it a legal transfer. Some states have taxes that can be waived if the boat is leaving the state.

If you have time, transfer title (and possibly register the boat/trailer) prior to picking it up, it will be an extra expense, but that way you are fully assured that everything is correct.

Thanks, i would be surprise that they would transfer the title to my name... I'm a non US resident, but again, like you said, every state as their own rules. We will inquire. The problem is that my friend tell me that it's no easy task communicating with NC DMV.

You might try retaining the services of a local, knowledgeable broker to prepare the paperwork and manage the signing process at the NC end. We did that and it did not cost that much- seems to me it was 2-$300 6 years ago. make sure you have the title paperwork complete and correct. In Ontario GST must be paid at time of entry.
