I have a 28.5 85' with the Yamar motor. I have replaced the fresh water impeller twice now because of failure. Is there a recall on some of these parts or not and are others still having the same problems. The parts where yamar parts manufactured by Johnson.

Impeller maintenance

Impellers are a maintenance item and will fail and need to be replaced. If it failed twice in a season, then you have a problem.

Reasons why impellers fail

They all wear out and should be replaced every year or two as routine maintenance...but grit or debris can cause even a new one to fail. Unfortunately that same grit or debris can also score the impeller housing, causing it to "eat" impellers just about as fast you can replace 'em...and that sounds like the problem here. The cure is a new housing.

yanmar parts

You say that the impellers were Yanmar parts manufactured by Johnson. I think what you mean is that they are listed as fitting Yanmar engines, but to my knowledge Johnson does not manufacture any parts under license for Yanmar. I don't believe that Yanmar has ever recalled any impellers, but I can't speak for Johnson. I would stick to genuine Yanmar parts, even if they cost a little more. Are you installing them, or is the yard doing the work? Impellers have to be installed correctly or they will fail. Read the service manual for instructions, or make sure the yard is doing it right.

Yanmar Impeller Failed

I had this problem on a new 1GM10 with less than 50 hrs. When I pulled the impeller to check, it looked fine. Then I noticed that the metal center and rubber outer portions of the impeller had become unbonded from each other. A set screw thru the metal and rubber would have been nice.

Impeller Q&A, and Another Q..

I had an impeller on the 3GM30F fail and toss its vanes up into the front of the heat exchanger. This after about 20 hours. It was NOT a Yanmar impeller. I had gone to a marine store and asked for an impeller. They looked it up and gave me one. But it was not a Yanmar. Normally, I am not sensitive to OEM parts, but I now use Yanmar exclusively. However, you opinionated folks out there, how about some speculation as to flow resistance (as in a constricted mixer) causing premature impeller failure??? Could that be a warning of other woes?? Yanmar - Never Fail

I've changed my impeller each spring for 6 years and have not had a failure yet - knock wood :) I always use Yanmar parts. For the extra couple of bucks, it's worth it. And always keep your old ones as a backup.

A bad batch

Somewhere in the archives I read about multiple failures that were traced to a bad batch of impellers. With the way that marine distribution channels work (small quantities and low turnover), there may still be a good many out there. Buy three. They're inexpensive.
