My 27 HP Yanmar runs great. I change the oil every launch and replace the intake hoses when they look worn. What I want to know, is how often should the impeller be replaced? I can't see the wear since it is closed up. So when do I replace it? Thanks

I check the impeller every year before launch,some people say to take it out during winter storage. It depends on a lot of different things how long it will last before it should be changed,they are around $20.00 and mine is really easy to change or just check I would change it before it goes bad out on the water. nick

You should check your impeller every season Looking for cracks where the blades meet the center. Any cracks and get a new one. if a blade breaks off it is overheating time. I replace mine regardless every other year.

How to
Replacing is not hard if you have good access. Locate your water pump, close sea cock if in the water, and take the plate off the housing. You will see the impeller. Note which way the blades are bent. I usually need a pair of long nose plyers to pull mine out - but the shaft and impeller just pulls out. The impeller is usually held on to the shaft by spring clip which you will want a pair of special plies to remove. They are cheap. I can't think of what the clip is called - (slip ring pliers?). Going in put a little winch grease around the wall of the housing where the blades ride. Put back in w/blades bent in the direction you found them. You will need to turn it as it goes in so the shaft keys in properly. You will know when that happens as the impeller will slide into the housing. You will want a new gasket for the cover and be sure to tighten it down in alternating stages so as not to crack the cover. Hand tighten each screw and then work your from corner to corner with half turns until it is snug. Don't forget to reopen the seacock - been there done that.

I use the hour meter
Through experience I have found that the impeller in my Volvo and my Westerbeke genset will last about 350-400 hours. I simply replace both every 300 hours which is 1 or 2 years depending if we do any extended cruising passages during the year.
