I have destroyed several impellers because of weeds clogging the system. Yhey rapidely fill the strainer and when the engine overheats, the light go on but it is too late. I am looking for a pressure gauge with a buzzer or somewarning that would indicate lack of water pressure between the strainer and the engine. Does anyone have any ideas. ? Thanks in advance. No Strainer.

Mon ami: Does you engine not have an strainer on the water intake. This would be the first place to capture any material before they get to the impeller. These strainers are usually right near the water intake seacock. You should also consider a thru hull fitting that has a grate on it. This will help keeping larger pieces from getting to the strainer.

Impeller appetite

Dear Steve, Yes, there is a strainer, and in spite of this, (I check it daily), I burned several impellers: Lake Champlain this year with low water level had a proliferation of weeds. Therefore I wanted to have additional protection. I thought of restraining the intake but I did not want to decrease the water flow. This is why I thought of a gauge between the strainer and the engine with some kind of warning system of low pressure. Any suggestions along that line ? Many thanks for your interest, Jean Hrab

New Strainer Type

Apparently Groco now makes a self-cleaning strainer. I don't know how it works but it may be an answer to your problem. Jim "Prospect"
