Impeller Issue

I have a 361 and have torn a fin or 2 on my impeller two years in a row. Quite costly to dig those buggers out of the system and caused overheating issues last time around. Impeller is a pain to get to on the Westerbeke and nearly impossible away from the dock. Wondering if anyone else has had this issue?

There are plastic "cages" over the inlets on the bottom of the hull - could they be hindering water intake and causing the impeller to heat up and break? I scraped all the bottom paint from between the "bars" when it was hauled last summer. Were these original on the boat or added by a previous owner. Not sure how easy they would be to remove or if I should?

Thoughts?

I learned to replace my impeller every spring as part of normal maintence no matter how few hours I put on the motor the previous year.

You are right, it's a pain to get to, so I had the yard do it and supplied the part and always had a spare on board just in case.

I don't think the paint has anything to do with it, just normal wear and tear.

Yes it is well worth replacing the impeller ever year and also it is worth smearing the impeller with rubber grease just as a precaution. such a little part can cause major headache when it breaks down. I suggest a 6 month inspection of the impeller as this is cheap insurance and I have never had to replace gasket as it seems to seal without a leak. check the paddles on the impeller by applying a little pressure both ways and check for splitting at there base.

Hi, I have also a Beneteau 361 with a Weterbeke 30B3 and although it is difficult to replace the impeller I do it every year. I have replace the impeller cover with the cover from SpeedSeal which make the cover installation easier. To facilitate the impeller insertion I put a tiewrap around the impeller to keep the rubber blade slightly compressed and in the right rotating direction. Hope this will help you.

I have the same problem with the water pump and need to change impeller. Any tips of how to get at it and also the best and easy way to do it?

What is Speedseal? Where to get it?
