I am looking for an easy on/off impellor cover which I saw advertised some time ago. It had 4 thumbscrews and various models were produced for Yanmar engines and others. Anyone know where I can find this product/company?

Every once and a while I see something that strkes me as over the top. 90 bucks for this? I bet a hardware store would have stainless steel cap screws and the appropriate allen wrench (taped to the coolant hose) for under $5. Randy

Speed Seal
A friend of mine has a "Speed Seal" cover on the water pump for his diesel. I have to admit, this is a high quality, nicely machined item with it's own "O" ring so no need to change gaskets whenever you open the pump. But this item makes no sense at all for my Yanmar 2GM20F, or any other diesel, that has an aft-facing water pump.

I replaced the impellor this spring, and considered the speed seal, as I was vainly attempting to remove the aft facing cover on my Yanmar. After wrestling with it for much too long, I just pulled the water pump and finished the work at the counter. Pulling and replacing the water pump took very little time. And unseating and reseating the impellor was enough of a challenge that I don't think I could have done it with the pump in place. No speed seal for me. It might make sense on some engines, but not mine. T J

They are alot of money. But if you have ever been out of sight of land and have to change the impeller, it makes the job alot easier. Bob

Just pull the pump off. Two bolts and you have it in your hand. It's no big deal. Even if you have some trick, super easy way to get the cover off, you still have to remove and re install the impeller. Some of the Yanmars can be a little tough in this dept. Much, much easier to do with the pump off. More importantly, when you change it with the pump off, there is a much better opportunity to get the gasket on correctly, and not have a leak. And last but not least, if you change the impeller on a regular basis, chances of having to do it away from the dock are almost nil.

I've often seen it on sailing mag advertising how Speed Seal made replacing impeller a breeze. Well it was my turn to replace a broken impeller to my Yanmar 2GM20F. Pump faces the engine so access is difficult. Wish I've Speed Seal on it. But as I remove the pump (left the hose connected), I realise that even with Speed Seal, it'll be an effort to remove the impeller with out removing the pump assembly from the mounting. So I decide to drop the idea of installing Speed Seal.
